Alex Grey’s ‘Ponchos of Star Wars’ Project

Illustrator Alex Grey pays homage to the many ponchos of 'Star Wars'

From the simple beige-and-brown sleeveless number worn by Luke Skywalker in A New Hope to the vibrant pink and orange garments of the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the denizens of that galaxy far, far away appreciate a good poncho when they see one.

I was browsing the #AttackOfTheClones hashtag on Instagram one afternoon when I stumbled upon Alex Grey’s art project, The Ponchos of Star Wars, and immediately fell in love with his art style. Alex is the lead illustrator for Blue Hippo Press and he has made it his mission to draw all of the ponchos ever seen in a Star Wars film, TV series, or video game.

At the time of writing, there were five artworks based on costumes from Attack of the Clones: Anakin’s peasant disguise, Padmé’s blue Tatooine poncho, Boba Fett’s poncho (which he’s wearing on the Slave I boarding ramp), Dorme’s purple poncho/mantle, and Jango Fett’s dark blue poncho, which he wore over his Mandalorian armour but never appeared in the film itself. Each of these began life as a pencil sketch before being inked and painted digitally.

You can find the complete collection of Star Wars ponchos (to date) over on Alex Grey’s Instagram account and if you’d like to view his professional portfolio or commission him to create a custom piece for you, visit the Blue Hippo Press website. You can find a selection of art for sale in his online store, including this beautiful set of watercolour paintings depicting six of the franchise’s most beloved female characters.
